This topic actually should be huge. I have (somewhere) a number of rules written down. I will be posting them here once I find them.
The inspiration for making my own list of rules was from a Star Trek episode where Wesley and some chick were quoting from theirs.
If I live long enough, I hope to go through that episode and see if there are some handy rules for me in it. And I will put a reference to that episode here.
in this page....
I always try to look for used things at second hand stores, or that people are throwing away, etc. Always wanting new is just greedy if something can be reused.
In the west, we normally just replace things (and throw out the old) when they break, get old, or just go out of fashion.
Repairing many things is usually not an option, simply because replacing is cheaper.
Replacing wastes raw materials. Even if it is expensive, as long as the overall environmental impact is lower by repairing, then do that first.
This is basically a rule I have to try and keep me from doing what I normally do - the opposite.
This happens even when I can't find my keys or something - I normally immediately panic and then frantically look for them. But if I remember the rule first, no problem. There is always time for panic later.
Think it out. Write it out. Post it publicly on the internet.
All worthwhile information needs to be shared, even if just personal thoughts.
I really mean with money or valuables. Existing is often gambling with staying alive... and there are other gambles in life, and I deal with those appropriately. But gambling with money? Never have, never will.
This is a personal rule, what you do is up to you. But please don't get addicted, and if you do, please get help. Or just an extremely good paying job.... Maybe at the casino....
Generally, food that humans in the west consume, is very unhealthy for animals. With the clear exception of raw untreated fruits, veggies, grains and nuts, as appropriate for the animal. Bread for ducks/waterfowl is probably bad. The rule is, don't feed wild animals unless you know from a professional what is acceptable, or it is a trustworthy commercial source specifying as for the specific wild animal. Pets and animals in captivity is the same, plus with permission from the owner/caregiver.
